MARKING
Choosing the right Boccia balls can make all the difference during a match. Every situation calls for a specific strategy, whether you want to :

• Knock away an opponent’s ball.
• Roll a ball all the way to the back of the court.
• Place a strategic ball that’s hard to dislodge.
• Select the texture that feels best for your most accurate throw.

Because every game is unique, there are endless possibilities on the court.
That’s why we’ve put together some key guidelines to help you choose the perfect balls—then fine-tune your selection through your own playing experience!
BALL HARDNESS
The most important characteristic of a Boccia ball is its density.
The harder the ball, the more power it retains, perfect for knocking away an opponent’s ball or rolling it all the way to the back of the court.
The softer the ball, the less it rolls, making it harder for your opponent to dislodge a well-placed shot.
A full Boccia set includes 6 pairs of balls and 1 Jack. Each pair consists of one red and one blue ball of the same density, meaning up to 6 different hardness per set.
BALL COVERINGS
After density, the covering is another key feature. Boccia balls are traditionally made of leather, but variations in velvet or cork are also found on the court.
While the thickness and grain of leather give the player more or less tactile control, a velvet finish provides exceptional grip.
A smoother surface, on the other hand, ensures an extremely consistent trajectory—ideal for ramp play or foot throws.
BALL COLORS
And finally colors!
Boccia balls must always be blue or red, with the Jack in white.
Some ranges are slightly darker than others, but this has no impact on play and can even help you quickly spot your own balls during a match.
AESTHETIC GENERALITIES
A Boccia ball is a true little gem that requires many hours of work, most of it handcrafted.
This meticulous process makes every ball unique, with its own character. Balls of the same color may show slight variations in shade, some may display small visual imperfections on the surface (marks or lines with no impact on play), and since the stitching is also handmade, a few minor irregularities may appear.
These aesthetic details have absolutely no effect on the ball’s quality. Only the standards set by the BISFed, which we carefully check before shipping, define compliance: weight, circumference, and minimum density.
So don’t worry if your balls aren’t “perfectly perfect”, that’s the beauty of a product crafted by hand, with passion and care!
Boccia : Precision, strategy, and pure Fun !
Boccia may be easy to pick up, but mastering it is an art. Played with balls of varying densities, each match challenges your precision, strategy, and decision-making. Unlike pétanque, the choice of ball adds a whole new layer of technique, making every throw a test of skill and tactics.
These guidelines are designed to help newcomers find their footing and choose the right ball hardness for their abilities. For experienced players, selecting balls becomes a strategic choice made together with a coach, tailored to the player’s strengths, style, and game objectives.
Step onto the court, choose your balls wisely, and experience the thrill of Boccia at its best !
KNOW YOUR PLAY RANGE
Discover your optimal throw distance by testing a Medium ball several times.
This simple measurement helps categorize players into three ranges : 1.5–4 meters, 4–6 meters, or 6–10 meters, the perfect starting point to select the balls that match your style and maximize your performance !

SOFT BALLS
« SuperSoft »
Low densité
• Placement balls
• Slower, designed for short-range play.
• Greater impact on the ground and good grip on the surface.

• For hand-players able to throw a Medium ball beyond 6 meters.
• From intermediate to advanced level.

The more a player develops their skill level, the more they need to vary their set of balls and adapt their game strategy using balls of different densities: Medium and Hard.

MEDIUM BALLS
from « Soft » to « Medium »
Medium density
• Intermediate balls
• Medium density and versatile in play.
• Suitable for most game situations.
• Recommended ball type for beginners.
• For hand-players able to throw a Medium ball between 4 and 6 meters.

As a player progresses, they should diversify their set of balls to create different game situations with balls of varying densities: Soft and Hard.

HARD BALLS
from « Medium-hard »
to « Super Hard »
High density
• Fast-rolling balls.
• Travel quickly and far.
• Ideal for shooting, moving, or disrupting the opponent’s balls.
• For hand-players experiencing difficulties in throwing.
• For players unable to throw a Medium ball beyond 4 meters.

As a player’s physical abilities (throwing power) increase, it is recommended to use softer balls.

Player dedicated ball set
Assigning a set of balls to a player allows them to make it their own, become familiar with it, and practice controlling ball effects to accelerate their progress.
New balls
New balls are rarely perfectly round and consistent, which can cause irregular trajectories on bounces.
For a set of balls to deliver consistent results, each of the thirteen balls must roll and bounce uniformly. This requires new balls to be “broken in” through practice and repeated use.
A set of brand-new balls is not yet refined enough to provide reliable performance for athletes.
Attempting to achieve performance with an unbroken, non-uniform set can challenge, or even frustrate, players of any level : beginner, intermediate, or advanced. Coaches should test the set themselves, observe each ball’s behavior (bounce and roll), and ensure that every ball, including the Jack, rolls and bounces straight. If the coach does not enjoy playing with the set, the player likely won’t either. Therefore, it is essential that coaches properly test and break in new Boccia balls.
